Angelina Jolie, Ed Sheeran auctioning their stuff? "Yawn" Not interested

Even if a celebrity sneezes, everyone’s interested, so a celebrity auctioning his or her jewellery, clothes or pics is guaranteed to make a killing, right? Wrong! And as singer Ed Sheeran’s clothes got no takers for an entire year, here are some other failed celebrity auctions

It’s no secret that fans are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for even more ridiculous trinkets of their favourite stars – be it Justin Timberlake’s half-eaten French Toast or a tissue that Scarlett Johansson used to blow her nose! So it’s a bit of a shock during those rare times when a celeb’s belongings fail to sell.As Ed Sheeran’s clothes got put on sale online recently after failing to sell for a year, we take a look at other celeb mementos that just couldn’t interest buyers.

Victoria Beckham’s wedding tiara
How can you go wrong with memorabilia from the wedding of two of the UK’s biggest stars? Yet, Victoria Beckham’s diamond-encrusted tiara that she wore to her wedding to David Beckham failed to sell in 2013 during an auction in the UK. When the coronet-style gold headpiece had no buyers willing to pay £18,000 (over Rs 18 lakh), the auctioneer was quoted as saying, “It didn’t find a home today, I’m afraid, and lives to fight another day. You missed a golden opportunity here and on the phones and online is all I can say.”

Sure, Angie was able to charge $4 million (over Rs 26 crore) for the first photographs of her daughter Shiloh, but it turns out, she can’t summon such selling power for everything that goes up for sale. During an auction in 2013 in Hong Kong, China, the jewellery she had co-designed and worn in 2010’s The Tourist, which also starred Johnny Depp, failed to sell when the only bids made were much lower than the worth of the platinum and diamond choker called Elise and her ring, which was set with a Columbian emerald.

Ed Sheeran’s used clothes
His songs sell like hot cakes. His clothes? Not so much. In early September, a charity organisation from the UK said it was putting up Ed Sheeran’s clothes online after the items got no bids for an entire year. “I would have thought anything Ed has worn would be valuable, but (the clothes) sat around for a whole year,” said Jacqui Bell, the charity’s manager. “We are pretty surprised too, but then Ed isn’t exactly known for his sense of style,” one site reasoned.

Michael Jackson’s unseen concert footage
He may be the King of Pop, but he clearly isn’t the king of auctions. In an auction in the UK, previously unseen footage of Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour couldn’t collect a cent, although it was expected to draw bids of anywhere from $6-8 million (over Rs 39-52 crore). Ironically, this occurred in 2011– the same year that Jackson became the highest earning dead celebrity. The auction house speculated the poor demand stemmed from the even poorer quality of the footage, which would have made it impossible for any buyer to resell it.

U2’s rare photos from their youth
Staying relevant in the music world for around four decades is no small feat, so you’d think U2’s star power would have been enough to sell memorabilia at any price. However, during a 2004 auction in Dublin, Ireland, never-seen-before black-and-white photos of the band members in their youth couldn’t interest fans. The lack of interest is particularly shocking as a few years later, the band’s lead guitarist The Edge’s instrument was sold for $2.4 million (over Rs 15 crore) at a charity auction – one of the many items from the band that has flown off the shelves since their failed 2004 auction.
